How to cite a podcast

A podcast citation takes three steps, from Spotify, Apple Podcasts or anywhere else.

Step 1

Paste the episode link, or search

Spotify and Apple Podcasts links fill in the episode, the podcast, the date and the producer. Where the podcast’s feed names them, we add the hosts and the episode number too.

Step 2

Check the hosts

Hosts are the detail students most often leave out, and APA starts the citation with them. Add them if the page didn’t name them.

Step 3

Copy your citation

Add the reference entry to your list, and add a timestamp for a quotation.

How to cite a podcast episode in APA

An APA podcast episode citation gives the host, the date, the episode title with its number, [Audio podcast episode], In and the podcast’s name in italics, the producer and the URL.

Episode format

Host, H. H. (Host). (Year, Month Day). Title of episode (No. #) [Audio podcast episode]. In Podcast name. Production Company. URL

Episode

Glass, I. (Host). (2011, August 12). Amusement park (No. 443) [Audio podcast episode]. In This American life. WBEZ Chicago. https://www.thisamericanlife.org/443/amusement-park

In-text citation, with a timestamp

Parenthetical: (Glass, 2011, 12:40)

Narrative: Glass (2011, 12:40)

A whole podcast

Vedantam, S. (Host). (2015–present). Hidden brain [Audio podcast]. NPR. https://www.npr.org/series/423302056/hidden-brain

A podcast still releasing episodes ends its years with present.

How to cite a podcast in MLA

MLA starts with the episode title in quotation marks, then the podcast in italics, hosted by and the host’s name, the episode number, the producer, the date and the URL.

Episode

“Amusement Park.” This American Life, hosted by Ira Glass, episode 443, WBEZ Chicago, 12 Aug. 2011, www.thisamericanlife.org/443/amusement-park.

How to cite a Spotify or Apple Podcasts episode

Use the link to the episode, not the show.

Spotify

Open the episode, choose Share and Copy link, and paste it above. We read the episode, podcast and date, and look up the hosts and number in the podcast’s feed.

Apple Podcasts

Open the episode and copy its link. A link that ends with ?i= and a number points to one episode; without it, to the whole podcast.

The podcast’s own site

Any URL where readers can find the episode works. APA and MLA don’t require the app you listened on.

How to cite a video podcast

Some podcasts are filmed and posted on YouTube.

Choose Video podcast

APA then writes [Video podcast episode] instead of [Audio podcast episode].

Paste the YouTube link here

It stays a podcast episode, marked as a video podcast. For a video that isn’t a podcast, use the YouTube citation generator.

A talk or a TV show

A recorded lecture or speech uses the lecture and speech citation generator, and a TV episode the TV show citation generator.
