Frequently asked questions
Is Writing Studio free?
Yes. Free has no time limit, and it’s a complete writing tool: you can write, cite, keep a library, check your references and export without paying anything. Its AI allowances are small and come back every day.
What stays free on every plan?
Everything that isn’t AI: unlimited documents and sources, PDF upload and reading, citing in every style with your reference list kept up to date, the reference checks in Check my paper, export to Word, PDF, LaTeX and web page, BibTeX and RIS, sharing, comments and version history.
Is Pro really unlimited?
Pro has no set allowances, but it has fair-use limits that exist to stop abuse. Normal writing, even a whole thesis, won’t reach them. If you ever do, Writing Studio tells you, and you can email support@writingstudio.com to have the limit lifted.
Is yearly billing worth it?
It costs about half as much a month, but you pay for the year in one go. It pays off if you’ll keep the plan for more than six months. For a single semester, monthly costs less overall.
Why are Free allowances daily and Plus allowances monthly?
Free allowances are small, so they come back every day instead of making you wait a month for more. Plus allowances are large enough that a month is the better unit, and you can spend them whenever you like.
When do allowances refill?
Daily allowances refill at midnight UTC. Monthly allowances refill on the 1st of the month, not on the day you subscribed. The app counts down the hours for you.
What happens if I reach a limit?
Writing Studio names the allowance and says when it comes back. Writing, citing and everything else that isn’t AI keeps working. You can wait for the reset, upgrade, or add your own AI key.
Can I use my own AI key?
Yes, on every plan, Free included. Connect a key from Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google (Gemini) or xAI (Grok), and AI features stop using your plan’s allowances, so you get peer and literature reviews even on Free. You pay the provider directly. Citation checks still count, and the hourly limit still applies.
Can I get more allowance for one busy week?
There are no add-on packs. You can use your own key to keep going, or pay for Plus monthly for the weeks you need it and cancel afterwards.
When does a new plan start?
Moving to a more expensive plan starts right away. Moving to a cheaper plan or to Free starts when your current billing period ends, and you keep your current plan until then.
Can I cancel any time?
Yes. Go to Settings, then Plan and usage, and click Manage next to Subscription. You keep your plan until the end of the period you’ve paid for, and then you’re on Free.
Do I lose my work if I cancel or go back to Free?
No. Your papers, sources and PDFs are yours on every plan. Going back to Free only lowers your AI allowances and takes away peer reviews and the literature review tool.
