How to cite in MLA

MLA style is published by the Modern Language Association. It is used in English, literature, languages and much of the humanities. Our generator follows the 9th edition. Sources go in an alphabetical list called Works Cited, with a hanging indent.

In-text citations

MLA uses the author’s last name and a page number in brackets, with no comma between them. If you name the author in your sentence, only the page number goes in brackets.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MLA 8 and MLA 9?

MLA 9 keeps the same core elements as MLA 8. It adds more guidance and examples, including a new chapter on inclusive language and more help with formatting papers and citing online sources.

Do I need an access date in MLA?

It is optional. MLA recommends adding one when a web source has no publication date or might change.

How do I cite three or more authors in MLA?

Name the first author, then write et al. This applies both in Works Cited and in the text.

What if there are no page numbers?

Leave the page number out of the in-text citation. If the source has numbered paragraphs or sections, you can use those instead, for example (Smith, par. 4).

Should Works Cited be double-spaced?

Yes. MLA papers are double-spaced throughout, including Works Cited, with a hanging indent for each entry.
