Everything in the Alt Text Generator. Alt text that describes the image, not a list of keywords.
Three options. A short one, a more descriptive one, and one that uses your keyword where it fits naturally.
Context aware. Tell it what the page is about, and the alt text describes what matters to that page.
Length shown. Each option shows its character count, so you can keep it under about 125 characters.
Decorative images. When an image looks purely decorative, it says so and suggests an empty alt instead.
Ready to paste. Copy the text, or the full img tag with the alt attribute filled in.
Not stored. Your image is resized in your browser and used only to write the text. We don’t keep it.
How to write good alt text. Alt text is read aloud to people who can’t see the image, and read by search engines. A few rules cover most images.
Describe what matters
Say what the image shows that matters on this page. A photo of a barista pouring milk on a coffee post might be “Barista pouring steamed milk into a flat white”. On a page about a café, the café’s name may matter more.
Keep it short
Aim for under 125 characters. Many screen readers break longer text into chunks, and long alt text is tiring to listen to. If an image needs a long explanation, like a chart, put it in the text around it.
Skip “image of”
Screen readers already say it’s an image, so “image of” and “picture of” waste words. Do say if it’s a screenshot, illustration or logo when that matters.
Use keywords only when they fit
Alt text helps Google understand images and can bring visits from image search. Use a keyword only if it honestly describes the image. A list of keywords is keyword stuffing, and it’s useless to people using screen readers.
Decorative images get an empty alt
Images that are only decoration, like a background pattern or a divider, should have alt="" so screen readers skip them. Leaving out the alt attribute is different: some screen readers then read the file name instead.
Alt text is a short description of an image in the img tag’s alt attribute. Screen readers read it aloud, and it shows when the image can’t load.
Under about 125 characters. Many screen readers break longer text into chunks, so say what matters and stop.
