Keywords in bold. The words of your search are bolded, as Google does in results.

Your tone. Pick a tone so the descriptions sound like your site.

Guide

Write meta descriptions people act on. The description is your pitch under the title. It doesn’t rank the page, but it wins the click.

Aim for about 150 characters

Google shows about 920 pixels of a description on desktop, around 150 to 160 characters, and about 680 pixels on mobile, around 120.

Put the most important part in the first 120 characters, so phones show it too.

Say what the reader gets

Lead with the benefit or the answer. “The best cold brew ratio is 1:8 for concentrate. Here’s how to measure and steep it” tells searchers exactly what’s on the page.

Use active voice and plain words. Write it for people, not for search engines.

Use the keyword once

Google bolds the words of the search in the description, which draws the eye. Use the keyword naturally once; more looks like spam.

Give a reason to click

End with what makes your page the one to pick: a free template, real prices, a step-by-step guide, an expert’s view. A soft call to action like “See the full list” helps too.

Write one for every page

Google rewrites many descriptions to match the search, but a clear description that answers it is the one most likely to be kept. Duplicate descriptions waste the chance, so make each unique.

Google rewrites descriptions it thinks don’t match the search, often using text from the page. Descriptions that answer the search clearly are kept most often.
