Guide

Write blog titles that get the click. Your title decides whether people read the post. A few rules make it work.

Use the words people search for

Find the phrase your readers type into Google and put it in the title, close to the start. If the search is “cold brew ratio”, a title like “Cold Brew Ratio: How Much Coffee to Water” matches it straight away.

Google and readers both scan the first few words, so lead with the topic, not with “The” or your brand.

Promise one clear result

A good title tells the reader what they get. “How to Clean a Cast Iron Pan in 5 Minutes” beats “Cast Iron Care Tips” because the reader knows the outcome and the effort.

Be specific with numbers, time, steps or who it’s for. Then make sure the post delivers what the title promises.

Formulas that work

How-to: “How to [get a result] without [a common problem]”. List: “[Number] [things] for [a goal]”. Question: “What Is [topic]? [The short answer]”. Guide: “[Topic]: A Beginner’s Guide to [result]”.

Match the format to what already ranks. If the top results for your search are lists, a list title is likely what searchers want.

Keep it under 60 characters

Google shows about 600 pixels of a title, roughly 50 to 60 characters. Longer titles get cut with “...”, so keep the important words first.

Your blog title (the H1) and your meta title can differ. The H1 can be longer; the meta title is the one that has to fit in Google.

Skip the clickbait

Titles that overpromise get clicks and then lose readers, and Google rewrites titles that don’t match the page. Write the title that describes the post best, then make it a little sharper.
