WordPress

Connect WordPress with an application password and publish posts with featured images. No plugin needed.

New to Writing Studio? See what it does for your WordPress blog.

Writing Studio publishes to your WordPress blog through WordPress's own REST API, with your featured images in your Media Library. There's no plugin to install.

What you need

  • A WordPress site where the REST API and application passwords are on (self-hosted WordPress 5.6 or later has both by default)
  • A user that can publish posts (an Author, Editor or Administrator)
  • An application password for that user

Make an application password

  1. In your WordPress admin, open Users › Profile for the user that will publish.
  2. Under Application Passwords, type a name like "Writing Studio" and choose Add New Application Password.
  3. Copy the password WordPress shows. It's shown once; the spaces in it are fine.

You can revoke it from the same place at any time, and Writing Studio stops publishing.

Connect

  1. In Writing Studio, open Integrations and choose WordPress.
  2. Enter your site address (like https://yourblog.com), the username, and the application password.
  3. Choose Connect.

What gets published

  • The title, slug, excerpt and full article, as a real WordPress post
  • The featured image, uploaded to your Media Library with its alt text and set as the post's featured image
  • The FAQ and the sources the article cites, at the end of the post as plain HTML your theme styles
  • Links to your own pages

When a post is refreshed, the same WordPress post is updated at the same address.

Publish them yourself in WordPress

Turn on Send posts as drafts and each post arrives in WordPress as a draft, for you to publish there.

If it won't connect

  • Wrong username or password: use the username, not the email address, and paste the application password again.
  • Application passwords are missing: they need your site on HTTPS, and some security plugins or hosts turn them off. Turn them back on, or ask your host.
  • The REST API is blocked: some security plugins block /wp-json/ for visitors who aren't signed in. Allow it for application passwords.

If a post fails to publish later, see Publishing for how retries work.
