Troubleshooting
What to do when Writing Studio can't read your site, a post doesn't publish, a draft doesn't finish, Search Console won't connect, images or emails are missing, or a payment fails.
The common problems, what causes them and what to do. Still stuck? Email support@writingstudio.com.
Writing Studio can't read my site
When you add a site, Writing Studio reads it like a visitor would.
- "didn't answer": check the address for a typo. If it's right, the site may be down; try again in a minute.
- "answered with an error": the address gives an error page. Check it opens in your browser, and use the exact address it ends up at.
- "redirected": use the address it redirects to.
- "turns readers like ours away": your site's bot protection (often Cloudflare or a security plugin) blocked the read. Choose Describe it and write a few sentences about what you sell, who it's for and how you sound. Writing Studio plans from that instead.
You can read a site a few times a day (3 on Free, 15 on a paid plan). Reads that fail don't count.
A post didn't publish
If your website is busy or down, Writing Studio tries again after 5 minutes, 30 minutes and 2 hours, and the article says when. If it still can't, the article shows Didn't publish with the reason, and we email you.
Most often it's one of these:
- Refused the credentials: the password, key or token changed or was revoked. Open Integrations, connect again, then choose Publish now on the article.
- Couldn't find that: the collection or blog was renamed or deleted. Pick it again in Integrations.
- No CMS connected: connect one, or copy the post across yourself.
- Publishing comes with a paid plan: on Free, copy or download each post instead.
Each setup guide has a section for its own problems: WordPress, Webflow, Framer, Shopify, Ghost, Next.js, webhooks, Zapier and Make. See also Publishing.
A post published, but it's not on my site
- Framer: the post is in your collection, but the site needs a page for the collection. See Framer.
- WordPress with Send posts as drafts on: it's waiting in WordPress as a draft.
- Next.js: check your site fetches from the content API and its revalidate route answers. See Next.js.
- A cache: some hosts and plugins cache pages for a while. Clear the cache, or wait.
A draft didn't finish
If writing fails, the article goes back to Planned with the reason, and it doesn't count towards your month. Choose Write it now to try again.
If Writing Studio is very busy, the article waits and carries on by itself; there's nothing to do. Each person can also only write so much in a day; if you hit it, it carries on within 24 hours.
Search Console won't connect
See Google Search Console. The usual causes: the Search Console box was unticked on Google's screen, or the Google account you used can't see your site.
The numbers look wrong or are missing
- Search Console runs about three days behind, so the last few days are never in.
- Articles appear under Results 14 days after they go live.
- A newly added Search Console property can take a few days to collect anything.
See Results.
An image is missing
- No featured image on an article: making it didn't work that time. Open the article and choose Generate image. See Featured images.
- No featured image on Webflow or Framer: your collection needs an image field. See their setup guides.
- Upload refused: use a PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF under 8 MB. You can make or upload up to 40 images a day.
I'm not getting emails
- Check spam and promotions, and add philip@writingstudio.com to your contacts.
- Check Settings › Profile › Email preferences. If an email to you ever bounced, optional emails are turned off; turn them back on there.
- Sign-in codes come from our sign-in provider, not from Writing Studio, so check spam for those too.
My payment didn't go through
A banner says Your last payment didn't go through. Choose Update card and add a card that works; your plan keeps working while you do. If the payment keeps failing, the plan moves to Free and nothing is deleted. See Plans and billing.
I've hit a limit
- Articles or refreshes: your month's allowance is used. It starts again on your next billing day, or upgrade for more.
- Free's article: Free includes one article per email address. Upgrade to keep writing.
- Sites: your plan's sites are in use. Upgrade, or remove one. See More than one site.
- Daily limits on reading sites, planning and refreshing numbers reset within 24 hours.
